SQL Server 2008 R2!

So, some breaking news from TechEd today is that a CTP for SQL Server 2008 R2 will be available in the second half of this year. I'll post more on what that's all about later this week, but other release news includes a Technology Preview of Office 2010 to be released by invitation only in July and Windows 7 to have a RTM in time for general availability during the holiday season.

UPDATE: A few more elements about R2....

Apparently Kilamonjaro - which I had always been told would be SQL 11 (and probably for a 2011 release) is now R2. Most of the features announced thus far are BI releated, though there is at least one piece oriented around eventing driven by low level data (I'm guessing the concept is ensuring eventing based on the lowest level - the data storage - rather than relying on whatever component is updating the data to know to check business rules and probably raise events).

Again, key things to watch for include:

  • Master Data Services
  • Application and Multi-Server Management
  • Support for Larger Than 64 Logical Processors
  • Low Level Data Eventing

Word is the R2 RTM will be somewhere in the first half of 2010.

Updated Site

As of this evening, I've updated the site to a newer version of the content management software I've used for the last few years. While most of the migration was automated, there were several pieces that required new add-ins, and those required manual intervention. As a result, it's entirely possible that a download file will come up missing or some other problem will show up. If you see something, don't be afraid to mail me.

A few layout changes and some updates to the graphics should show up shortly after I get back from TechEd. One of the nice things about the update is that it should facilitate posting of some of the more robust items I have planned for the weeks and months ahead - Stay Tuned!

How to Interview a DBA?

So, today, I was working on a case interview for a new Production DBA position. For those who have no idea what a "Production DBA" is, think of it as a somewhat typical implementation of the DBA (A as in Administrator in this case), only it is supporting database implementations of a specific application suite for a large number of customers (say, 75 of them). The case interview is one where we step outside of specific technical questions, and instead focus on problem solving and analytical skills.

How does one figure out if someone is a good DBA?
